St. Georges Hospital, Blackshaw Road, London, SW17
BibbEgan undertook this very large demolition project at the height of the Covid pandemic and had to work in a live hospital environment, undertaking works that would normally create huge amounts of dust at a time when hospital wards needed to keep all their windows open to circulate air to limit spread of Covid.
To achieve this, we used state of the art demolition equipment in unison with cutting edge dust monitoring equipment to both ensure and to demonstrate that our works were not leading to airborne particles. We also had to demolish buildings immediately next to the main oxygen tanks that were critical to operation of what were full ICU wards due to the Covid pandemic.
Our first activity was to establish a fully hoarded site area so that all lorries and deliveries could be escorted behind rigid hoarding with a traffic marshal front and rear of all vehicles.
Once behind the hoarding, works could commence, but not until a detailed “track and trace” of all services was undertaken so that we were able to remove just those services that fed the buildings to be demolished and not those that fed the parts of the hospital that were to remain and were required for the effective operation of the school.
Once this was complete, a very comprehensive asbestos removal package could commence. This was all done under fully controlled conditions and no demolition removal activities, operatives in asbestos overalls, asbestos waste or decontamination units were visible from the school.
